The House Across the Lake by Riley Sager
My rating: 1 of 5 stars
My first and last Riley Sager read if this is what his books are like. No, thank you.
THE HOUSE ACROSS THE LAKE is very Hitchcock-like for maybe 80% of the book then it turns confusing, bizarre, and just ridiculous. Riley Sager even references Rear Window, Jimmy Stewart and Grace Kelly as if to trigger that vibe in case you didn't already get the many clues. The setting is Fall on a creepy lake with houses around it in Vermont; there is def a feeling of Rear Window down to binoculars and people-watching in the houses.
The main character, actress, alcoholic and widow Casey Fletcher, is at her family's lake house for a spell while she retreats from the paparazzi during this hard personal time. While there she spies on offseason neighbors; mysteries surface in and around the lake.
The writing is slow yet paced well. I found the storyline interesting and possibly predictable yet it made a hard turn and was a serious mess for me to digest. Lazy ending and truly this story had such great potential. What a waste.
SPOILER ALERT!!!
This book would've been brilliant if it had been revealed Tom/Len had multiple personaliies or Katherine/Casey had something like that -somehow that characteristic would've worked and been somewhat more believeable that what was given the reader. It was beyond-beyond far fetched and then it didn't leave it there - it kept going and spiraled into a major train wreck for me. Comical - I thought he was reverred a good writer. This was a waste of reading time.
