Dear Reader,
On Emily's podcast recently, she was knitting (which she has since finished in speedy time!) a Flax sweater for her son. I have seen this design by Tin Can Knits oodles of times but for some reason, this time was the time which grabbed me and declared it time to knit one! I am a first time Aunt this summer as I have a brand new nephew, a little over a month old, (he's the cutest little bugaboo) so I'm now forever thinking of things to knit for him. If you know my knitting story, then you know I don't knit sweaters. I lack that brain cell. Or so I thought. However, this design is a top down Raglan sleeved sweater which looked simple and my-speed from the get go AND the pattern is free! How could I not make it?
I printed the pattern rather quickly and then headed to the yarn cupboard which needs more skeins to browse yet I had this caked up Miss Babs in sportweight, colorway Believeable which not only was the perfect weight but a colorway that would be great for a baby boy. I call it sweater knitting destiny.
I knit the 6-12 month size; the sleeves have the garter detail at the top yet I opted for a stockinete arm because I discovered I do not like to purl in the round so that wasn't happening on 9" circulars. No way, no how. I like how it came out. As Stephen West would say, it's a design feature! (I took one of his workshops last January and since then, my knitting pieces have included many design features which truly make them mine and I'm OK with that.)
The pooling of this yarn is really fun and whimsical. I recommend the design for beginner sweater knitters. All I need to do is wash and block it ... such a fast, satisfying beautiful knit to make.
